There is a certain clarity in our vision in the hours following
a storm. Have you ever noticed? Yesterday, after several days of heavy rain, I
woke up to a beautiful sunny day. As I opened
the curtains and looked out the window, I was amazed to see the sun look
brighter, the sky look bluer, and the air seem clearer than it had for days. There were only a few puffy, white clouds
floating by, but even they seemed whiter and more three dimensional than usual. Even the trees seemed more in focus as I
watched the birds dart in between their branches. The day prior had been so different. It had been dark and stormy, making
visibility difficult through the rain.
The contrast of the two days seemed to mirror what happens
to our perception as we face trials in our lives. So often, when we are in the middle of a
storm in life, we can’t see past the difficulty to the clearer days ahead. It is much easier, it seems, to focus on the
elements which batter our emotions than to see the hope that God promises
us. What should we do while we wait for
the trial to pass? We need to move our gaze from the rain to our Savior! As we pray and open God’s word, our
relationship with Him will deepen and our faith will grow. We may not understand why certain things are
happening to us. They may seem confusing
and unexplainable. However, God knows us
completely. He sees our future and He
promises that one day, everything will come into focus.
“Now we see things
imperfectly, as in a cloudy mirror, but then we will see everything with
perfect clarity. All that I know now is partial and incomplete, but then I
will know everything completely, just as God now knows me completely” (1
Corinthians 13:12).
So, as we pass through the storms of life, let’s remember
that the skies will clear. As we place our hope and faith in God, He
will guide us as we walk through this life with Him. We don’t need to see clearly now, for we can
trust our God, who does.
"...for we walk by faith, not by sight" (2 Corinthians 5:7).
