My First Appointment

Tuesday, March 27, 2012

Ok, I admit it!  I can be a “high-energy” person at times! This is most obvious when the day is early or when I’m inspired by something. I’m not afraid of work…well, unless it involves heavy lifting and body strain! However, over the past few months, I’ve become somewhat of a “sloth”. You know, one of those odd looking creatures that spend their time hanging upside down in trees and only move about a foot an hour! I’m exaggerating a bit (?); however, it is how I have been feeling. You see, back in the fall, I quit my full time job due to the long, stressful commute and the need to focus on other areas of my life. I have been on what many might call an extended vacation! The first few weeks were a wonderful time of resting and recouping. I was able to catch up on things that had been falling by the wayside. Then, the holidays came and I was free to throw myself fully into them. But, after the new year began, I noticed a slowing down in my activity level. I fell into a fairly relaxed and slow moving daily pattern.

During this slower period in my life, I have been listening and waiting for God’s directions as to what my next step with Him would be. And, as many of you already know, that next step begins in just a few days! I accepted a position in my local church and am blessed to have the opportunity to serve God alongside a wonderful group of fellow servants. I am excited to begin, but realize that before I do, I need to get myself organized again! My “relaxed” schedule will become full once more, and my goal is to accomplish all that God places before me. I know that He will enable me to do all that He desires and I am fully dependent on Him.

“For I can do everything through Christ, who gives me strength” (Philippians 4:13).

The most important step to becoming more organized will be to always begin my day with the Lord. It has already been my habit to have my quiet time in the morning, but now, more than ever, I need to stay true to that first appointment of the day. “In the morning, O LORD, you hear my voice; in the morning I lay my requests before you and wait in expectation” (Psalm 5:3). I have discovered over the years that beginning my day focused on God sets the tone for the entire day. It is during that time that He prepares me for the hours to come. Jesus Himself would come before the Father in the morning, and His example is a great one to emulate! “Very early in the morning, while it was still dark, Jesus got up, left the house, and went off to a solitary place, where he prayed” (Mark 1:35).

As God prepares me for my day, I can go forth with confidence knowing that He will be beside me. His encouragement strengthens me and inspires me to throw myself fully into the work He has prepared in advance for me. This is an exciting time and I am honored and humbled to be able to serve our God and hopefully make a difference for Him.

“I thank Christ Jesus our Lord, who has given me strength, that He considered
me trustworthy, appointing me to His service” (1 Timothy 1:12).
